WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- About 16,000 drivers each day will see some big changes as construction gets underway at the Flagler Memorial Bridge.

The construction has been heavily debated and discussed, with several months of delays. But Monday, temporary and permanent lane closures will change traffic.

The 1938-built bridge is a northern artery that connects the Town of Palm Beach to the City of West Palm Beach over the Intracoastal.

After 75 years of wear and tear, the Department of Transportation determined the bridge is "structurally deficient," meaning it doesn't meet current standards.

The new bridge replacement will include wider travel lanes, broader shoulders and a new median. There will also be new storm water drainage, new signs and traffic signals. There will be fewer piers spaced father apart. Flagler Drive will be reconstructed from 4th Street to north of 7th Street to allow for a new intersection.

Phase 1 should last about three months. The ramp from northbound Flager Drive to eastbound A1A will be closed permanently, while the ramp from westbound Flagler Memorial Bridge to northbound Flagler will be closed temporarily. Additional closures and changes will unfold during the next three years of construction.
