SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper and one other person were seriously injured Monday morning after colliding on Summit Boulevard and Davis Road in Suburban West Palm Beach around 6:40, according to the FHP.

FHP Trooper Tommy Rodriguez was traveling eastbound on Summit Blvd. when Miriam G. Acosta, 65, attempted to make a left turn in her Hyundai Elantra at the intersection of Summit and Davis, crossing directly in front of the trooper's path and striking him head on.

Acosta's Hyundai then spun and traveled in an eastbound direction, slamming into Angelo Rivera Melo, 41, who was driving a Hyundai Sonata. Melo was not injuried.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez's cruiser spiraled and struck the raised curb at the southeast corner of the intersection and then traveled onto the grassy shoulder, striking a light pole guide wire.

The Palm Beach Post reports that Rodriguez rushed from his vehicle to check on Acosta but laid back down on the grass to wait for help after learning that she was okay.

A Trauma Hawk transported Rodriguez and Acosta to Delray Medical Center, both of which were seriously injured during the wreck, according to a report from FHP.

Summit was closed at Davis Road during rescue and cleanup efforts.

The exact injuries sustained by both Acosta and Rodriguez are not available at this time.
