WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Distracted driving is once again in the spotlight in South Florida. We spotted distracted drivers just as easily as you do.
"I see people reading books, putting on makeup. It's crazy," said Chris Manning, of Boca Raton.
Our cameras captured three people using cell phones while they were driving on Wednesday night.
"They don't pay attention at all. It's like drinking and driving, basically," said Aubrey Platt of Sunrise.
Wednesday afternoon, a crash involved an off-duty sheriff's deputy in West Boca. Investigators say the driver in her late 20s lost control of her Buick and spun in front of the detective's car.
Though there are no conclusions yet, one of the first things deputies will check is her cell phone.
"It's a possibility she was texting, looking at the floor, doing something to lose control of the vehicle. We talk to people everyday about how important it is not to text and drive," said Lt. Michael Reardon of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office traffic division.
Safe driving is Boca State Rep. Irv Slosberg's number one issue. He says his bill was bottled up last session because of powerful libertarians in Tallahassee.
"Everyday, lives are being risked," said Slosberg.
Slosberg says people might put down the phones if they knew they could be pulled over for it.
Or how about the threat of jail?
A teen was sentenced in Massachusetts to two and a half years for causing a fatal crash while he was texting.
"I wish someone would put a stop to it, honestly," said Manning.
Slosberg says he's hopeful that the next speaker of the state house will be more open to his texting while driving legislation.
Florida remains one of eleven states that does not have a distracted driving law.
