WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A former West Palm Beach police officer accused of illegally renting homes, will face a judge Wednesday.
The charges against Carl Heflin include residential burglary, fraud, and grand theft of more than $100,000.
This is the second time Heflin is being accused of organizing mortgage fraud. He was re-arrested after additional cases were reported and he is currently in jail.
The 52-year-old was first arrested in June, 2009 for one of the biggest mortgage fraud cases in Palm Beach County history.
Heflin was making thousands of dollars a month on 25 to 30 different homes throughout the West Palm Beach, Riviera Beach, and Lake Worth communities.
A detective with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says Heflin tried to take over dozens of homes using a centuries-old concept.
Deputies say it was a statute used for farming property.
Heflin is now facing more than 40 charges.
The first time around, the judge set Heflin's bond at 160-thousand dollars.
