WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Susan Landeryou says she has the best view in all of downtown West Palm Beach.
I overlook the Meyer," said Landeryou.
But she admits, the view from her condo can look alot better.
"Its way more beautiful when the grass is all green," said Landeryou.
Landeryou walks her 3 dogs, at least 3 times a day around the Meyer Amphitheatre. She says the rain and 70 plus events that occur here every year take a toll on the grass.
Well it looks terrible as you can see," said Landeryou.
Landeryou is referring to all of the dirt and holes on the lawn. Now the city is considering replacing the natural grass with a synthetic form.
If you put in artificial grass, its a one time expense and within a couple of years, its paid for, you don't pay as mulch to maintain it," said Elliott Cohen.
The city says it costs 81-thousand dollars a year to re-sod and maintain the natural grass. They also have to shut the park down 4 weeks at a time for re-sodding, which takes place twice a year.
This thing will be a little bit settled as we play on it more," said Doug Socha.
Doug Socha is the coach at Oxbridge Academy. He says they don't have to stop using the field since they switched to synthetic turf two years ago.
"Even if its raining and no lightning we can still practice on it and not worry about it puddling up," said Socha.
City officials say installing the artificial grass would cost $200,000. They point out it would save the city by cutting maintenance costs, require fewer chemicals, and make the theatre more eco-friendly.
