WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Today is World Autism Awareness Day. Studies suggest 1 in 88 children in the U.S. alone are on the autism spectrum.
The numbers are sobering and the global awareness is vital. But it all comes down to the personal connection for so many of us. I'm one of them. My nephew is autistic. I've watched for nearly 15 years as his parents and sister pour themselves into his care-boundless love, courage, compassion on display every second of every day.
For our loved ones, and for so many families everywhere, it is important to know they have a larger voice speaking on their behalf. Autism Speaks is that voice. It was founded by Bob and Suzanne Wright. He's the former chairman and CEO of NBC Universal and the Wright 's grandson is autistic.
The couple lend their impassioned voice to the vital cause of autism research and the growth of local resources to help families. I put a link below if you'd like more information. It is a fight that will be with us for a long time to come and I salute all the families waging it with unstinting devotion.
