WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Ten people waiting for President Barack Obama to speak in South Florida have been hospitalized after suffering heat exhaustion.
West Palm Beach Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jose Montero says more than two dozen other people have been treated for heat exhaustion outside the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
Montero says most of the victims were seniors. Those treated at the scene were given ice packs and water while their vital signs were monitored.
Obama was scheduled to give a speech at the convention center late Sunday afternoon. Officials tell The Palm Beach Post ( http://bit.ly/PUhfvQ) that people began standing in line hours before it opened. Temperatures neared 90 degrees with high humidity.
More than 1,000 people lined up outside the convention center. Many brought umbrellas to shade themselves from the sun.
