WELLINGTON, Fla. -- A Wellington woman was arrested Sunday after she was accused of beating her elderly mother so severely that she had to be placed in intensive care.
Marie Elise Ott, 47, is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $1,500 bond. She is facing a charge of aggravated battery on a person of 65 years of age or older.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies began the investigation after they received a phone call from a staffer at the Wellington Regional Medical Center’s emergency room, who reported abuse of an elderly patient at 1:05 a.m. Sunday.
The 83-year-old woman told deputies that she has lived with Ott — who is her daughter — since 2008. She added that Ott suffers from bipolar disorder.
The woman further said that as the two were in the kitchen talking, the conversation turned “heated,” according to the arrest report. She said that Ott began to punch her in the face; also possibly hitting her with a phone.
She said she tried fighting back, but failed.
The woman said she managed to escape and drive herself to the nearest hospital. She was later transferred to Delray Medical Center’s intensive care unit.
The deputy noted in the report that the woman’s left eye was swollen shut. Also, it was noted that she had scratches down the right side of her face and on her chin, which was also swollen and bruised.
