Jessica Wilson was ready to have her baby, but her mother wanted her to make the history books.
"She made me hold it in for 32 minutes," said Wilson, 21, of Fort Lauderdale. And then, "they didn't have to tell me to push, I couldn't take it anymore."
Her mother's request paid off. Wilson's baby girl, Kholie Sheree Kemp, born at 12:02 a.m. Tuesday at Broward Health Medical Center, became Broward County's first baby in 2013. She weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and is 20 inches long.
Kholie's birthday will "always be celebrated with fireworks every year," said LaSandra Davenport, Wilson's mother.
Kholie wasn't due until Friday, but Wilson knew her New Year's Eve plans — a quiet dinner at her boyfriend's family's home — would have to wait until next year.
"I'm very happy," said Wilson, a stay-at-home mom. "She's my pretty little angel. It's going to be a good year for us all." Wilson and Roderick Kemp have one other child, Kalila, 22 months.
Some of the other baby firsts in Broward County include Micielo Jones, born at 12:07 a.m. to Shontrina Jones, of Pembroke Park, at Memorial Hospital Miramar; Lucas Castro, born to Julianna Castro and Rodrigo Castro, of Sunrise, at Broward Health Coral Springs at 2:10 a.m.; Ma'nija Mona'Sia Monique Hanes, born at 5:48 a.m. at Northwest Medical Center to Lakali Herbert and Michael Hanes, of Pompano Beach; and Collin Laurent was born at 9:42 a.m. at Plantation General Hospital to Rosa Merlo and Doug Laurent, of Davie.
In Palm Beach County, the first honor went to a baby boy born at 12:09 a.m. at Wellington Regional Medical Center. Jaheim Owen Doricent was 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 20 1/2 inches long, said his mother Johanne Joseph, of West Palm Beach.
His early arrival — he was due Jan. 22 — didn't surprise Joseph all that much. She had a dream a few weeks ago that he would arrive at 11:59 p.m. New Year's Eve. And it almost happened that way: Her plans to attend church Monday night were scrapped when the contractions began. "It was very painful," she said.
But shortly after midnight, Jaheim arrived and nursing staff, who had called other hospitals to see who took the first place win, were excited to tell her the news. "He's a star now," Joseph beamed.
As they recovered, Joseph said she has big plans for her first-born, including playing soccer with his dad, Wenchel Doricent, of Haiti, and music lessons: "everything good," she said.
