SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - One person is dead after a deputy-involved shooting in the parking lot of the Palm Beach County Credit Union at 3469 Summit Boulevard, in suburban West Palm Beach.

Authorities were called just after 4 p.m. after someone in the credit union saw a man with a rifle in the parking lot.

When deputies arrived a few minutes later the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the man opened fire.

"As they pull into the parking lot....the suspect fired at the deputies. You can actually see the flat tire and a couple of bullet holes in the car. The deputies returned fire to the suspect. The suspect went down, neutralized at that spot and he is deceased." said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

The sheriff said the deceased gunman is a white male in his 20s. They have a tentative identity and are working to notify his family.

"The bottom line is we don't know if the guy was here to do a robbery, we don't know what the circumstances that caused him to come here with that rifle," said sheriff Bradshaw.

The sheriff said the gunman had a high-capacity magazine that looks to be in excess of 50 rounds.

The deputies did an "excellent job", the sheriff said. "The bottom line is he didn't hurt anybody at the scene."

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office bomb squad was called after a backpack belonging to the gunman was found. The sheriff said since there is the possibility there could be explosives in it they don't want to take any chances.

Deputies located a running vehicle which they suspect belonged to the gunman.

Summit Boulevard is closed between Davis Road and Congress Avenue.
