New numbers released Tuesday by RealtyTrac show how many foreclosed homes are sitting empty in South Florida.
The real estate data-gathering company reports that one fifth of the nation's foreclosures are owner-vacated. Florida leads the nation by far. In top metropolitan areas, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, which includes Palm Beach County, has 13,901 vacant foreclosures. It is second in the nation to the Chicago area.
Nine of the top twenty metropolitan areas are in Florida.
Daren Blomquist, Vice President of RealtyTrac, suggests Florida has a long foreclosure timeline because of new laws that took effect in the last six months that speed up the process.
