ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. — A deputy who shot and killed a suspect during a home invasion this weekend shot and killed a 16-year-old during a similar situation three years ago.
The frantic 911 call that came to deputies Saturday night told emergency responders that people were banging on the front door of a Royal Palm Beach home, claiming to be police.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says deputy Eric Bethel responded as masked and armed intruders forced their way into the home. When deputies arrived, the intruders tried to run.
That's when, PBSO says, 24-year-old Jamar F. Anderson paused for a moment, then drove at the officers. Deputy Bethel fired one shot, struck Anderson in the neck and killed him.
In 2008, PBSO says Bethel was involved in a similar situation where he shot and killed a 16-year-old suspect.
The Palm Beach Post reports that Bethel fired while the 16-year-old drove a car that was believed to be stolen into the his car. The state attorney's office looked into the case and cleared Bethel.
Bethel is currently on paid administrative leave while the state attorney's office investigates Saturday's incident. Two additional suspects are still being sought in the home invasion.
