PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies say they've solved a deadly hit and run. Katherine Rigby's family has been waiting for an arrest since mid-June, when she was run over on her bicycle.
68-year-old Robert Barbieri is waiting for his court appearance tomorrow morning after deputies say they snuffed out a family member's attempt to cover for him.
Charging documents say Robert Barbieri had come home on June 16th at 7:30, a half hour after Katherine Rigby was found at the side of the road, mortally wounded during a bike ride with her son. Rigby was Michelle Comiskey's roomate.
"To be so young, to be forty years old and get hit by a car and left to die, it just kills me," said Michelle Comiskey, a former roommate of Rigby.
An annonymous witness later told deputies Barbieri was upset that June night, his head against a wall, saying he'd hit something on the way home.
"That's what gets me," said Comiskey. "How can you not know you hit a person?"
The witness led investigators to the home two days after the crash, saying there was damage to a Chevy Tahoe in the driveway.
But relative Cheryl Barbieri allegedly told investigators she hit a mailbox with it.
Neighbor Jeff Judy says he saw the confrontation.
"They were talking about car, asking her questions about why. It seemed like she was as curious about the car as they were."
But deputies were able to piece together a broken headlight from the scene.
When they got to the home, they were able to slide it right into a space in Chevy Tahoe, like a missing puzzle piece.
We knocked on Barbieri's door today, but were told to go away.
Barbieri has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
Rigby's roommate hopes he pays for it.
"Go to jail. Rot in jail. Whatever he's gotta do. Whatever has to be done, has to be done, and not just walk away," said Comiskey.
The sheriff's office says that Barbieri's daughter has not been charged, and couldn't say whether they are considering charges.Barbieri will face a judge Wednesday morning.
