RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. - Riviera Beach Police have identified a suspect in the attempted murder of a law enforcement officer Friday evening, according to Rose Anne Brown, spokeswoman for the police department.
Brown said that evidence recovered from the scene and subsequent investigation led police to name 23-year-old Travis Matthews as the suspect in the attempted murder of a police officer.
Friday evening a Riviera Beach Police K-9 officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a silver four-door Mercury Marquis in the 900 block of Avenue O when the driver exited the car and fled the scene on foot. As the officer pursued the suspect, the "officer heard a gunshot and saw a muzzle flash from the area where the suspect was last seen," Brown said.
The officer was not injured.
An arrest warrant was issued for Matthews on Saturday.
Matthews is described as a black male with medium-length dreadlocks and wearing a black hat.
Anyone with information regarding this case, or the whereabouts of Matthews, is asked to contact Riviera Beach Police at 561.845.4123 or Crime Stoppers at 1.800.458.TIPS..
