RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — Police have captured a man suspected of trying to kill his girlfriend Wednesday.

Robert L. Benjamin, 55, is in custody in Alachua County. He was captured after a high speed chase that began in Ocala Wednesday night. He was airlifted to Shands Hospital in Gainesville after crashing his girlfriend's vehicle in Levy County, Riviera Beach police spokeswoman Rose Anne Brown said in a release this morning. Information about his condition was not immediately available.

Benjamin was allegedly involved in a stabbing incident at about 4:30 a.m. at a residence in the 1600 block of West 11th Street, a city police statement said.

Officers found a woman with multiple cuts and abrasions from a sharp object, the statement said. The woman was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach in serious but stable condition.

Benjamin fled the area in his girlfriend's green four-door 2002 Ford Explorer.
