Charlie A. Lowell, Miami Marlins minor league player, arrested on domestic battery charges

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. -- A 22-year-old minor league baseball player with the Miami Marlins' organization was arrested this weekend in Riviera Beach, charged with beating his girlfriend.

Riviera Beach police say Charlie A. Lowell, a left-handed pitcher, choked and slapped his girlfriend Saturday morning after finding out that she cheated on him.

Police responded to Lowell's home on Canopy Lane in the Thousand Oaks development around 6:45 a.m. to find his girlfriend of two-and-a-half years with bruises and marks on her neck.

She told police Lowell went through her phone and found text messages from an unknown man and became upset. She said Lowell then pushed her up against a bedroom wall, choked her and called her a "ho" and a "slut," according to the arrest report.

The woman told investigators Lowell later pushed her onto a bed, threw clothing on top of her and pulled her down a flight of stairs by her arm, the report reads.

After locking her out of the home, the woman told police Lowell came outside and slapped her on the right side of her face with an open hand.

While being questioned by officers, Lowell admitted to slapping his girlfriend and pulling her down his stairs, the arrest report states. However, Lowell said he did not hit her anywhere else and there was no other physical violence.

Investigators photographed several red marks on the victim's neck and on the right side of her cheek.

Lowell was arrested and charged with domestic battery by strangulation. He was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail at 11:05 a.m.

Lowell played most of last year for Greensboro Grasshoppers , the Miami Marlins' Class-A team.

He was selected by the Miami Marlins in the sixth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Wichita State University.
