PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Nick Mohnacky grew up in Hawaii and was immediately drawn to the water. He now calls Palm Beach County home and still loves to get wet.
"I've been spear fishing my whole life and free diving and surfing for about 15 years so it's an incredible place to be here in Palm Beach County."
When he's not surfing, he likes to snorkel and dive.
"When it's flat it's just nice to get out, put on the fins, put on the snorkel gear and maybe take a spear pole out and go spear fishing… catch dinner for the night"
In fact Nick's not alone, Palm Beach County ranks as one of the top snorkeling and diving destinations in the country.
To get this information out to the world the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resource Management created a "reef mapping app" showing the area's 200 plus reefs.
Matthew King was the Environmental Program Manager for the project. "What it really does is it shows you the location of all the artificial and natural reefs throughout the county."
Janet Phipps is a Coral Reef Ecologist for PBCERM. "We created the app because this is a lot of valuable information for the users, the divers, the fisherman…and it's also something they can use while from their boat."
Information on the reef and coordinates are available on the app. It also calculates distance between two points, so you can see how far you are from that perfect reef.
Nick is excited to plan his next adventure.
"To be able to map in between and... chart which ones you want to go to and which ones you been to which I didn't even realize…there's probably 30-40 reef on the app that I didn't even know about. It's just cool to explore and hopefully get out there when it's a nice day."
The county plans on creating more artificial reefs in the future, and each one will be automatically updated in the app. The app is available for the android and iphone for free.
