PALM SPRINGS, Fla. -- One man is dead and another is behind bars following a home invasion in Palm Springs last night.
Investigators were called to a home in the 900 block of Springdale Circle around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after calls that two men forced their way into a residence.
Police said one of the men living there, 24 year old Alex Cartaya, shot and killed one of two men suspected of breaking in.
The other suspect 26 year old Julio Reid of Miami, fled the scene, but was later tracked down by a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office search K-9 near Kirk Road and a canal just north of the address, according to police.
There were several people inside the home at the time, including two children, but police said none of the residents were physically injured.
Cartaya was later arrested after police say they found two pounds of marijuana and $20,000 cash inside the home.
"It appears this wasn't a random event, narcotics were involved. It appears this home was targeted because of the man's profession," says Palm Springs Police Chief Tom Ceccarelli.
Police have yet to release the name of the suspect killed.
