PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Because 13-month-old Taylen is growing up fast, it’s time for him to get fitted for a new car seat.
His mother, Pamela Griffin, along with dozens of other parents, went to Community Partners Saturday to get a free car seat.
“I knew he had outgrew (sic) his other car seat and we needed one that would fit the car,” said Griffin.
Leopold Law, Safe Kids of Palm Beach County and Bridges, hosted the event for “National Seat Check Saturday”.
Organizers wanted to tie the event with Child Passenger Safety Week.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that car crashes are the leading cause of death for children 1 to 13 years old.
The goal is to educate parents on child safety laws and how to keep their precious ones safe while cruising.
Leslie Kroeger, a shareholder with Leopold Law, said many parents are not sure how to size their child for a car seat.
Kroeger said, “What a lot of people don’t realize is that it’s not so much the age of the child, it’s the weight of the child, it’s the height of the child and it truly depends on the vehicle that they’re riding in.”
She said that Florida is one of two states that has no restrictions on car seat laws once the child turns four year old.
They’re hoping lawmakers will consider making changes during the next session.
“We’ve been working diligently over the past almost ten years, almost a decade now to try to get our laws increased so that’s it’s not four, and hopefully, not five or six but possibly even seven. We know from the work that we do and our partnership with safe kids and what we’ve done around the nation is that that’s completely unacceptable because it’s the easiest way to injure and to kill a child,” Kroeger said.
Organizers fitted more than 85 children for booster and car seats Saturday.
