PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Lantana's police chief struck an unmarked Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office vehicle in Boca Raton Wednesday afternoon and was later arrested according to Boca Raton police.
According to a police report, a maroon Ford Explorer rear-ended the deputy on Military Trail at NW 40th Street. The deputy was driving an unmarked PBSO vehicle and claims, after the impact, the Explorer changed lanes and continued driving north.
The deputy put on his lights and ordered the SUV to pull over.
They stopped in the parking lot of the Office Depot headquarters at 6400 North Military Trail.
The deputy described the driver as 'confused and disoriented.' He said when the driver got out of his vehicle he could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage when he spoke.
A Boca Raton police officer arrived to investigate and discovered the driver of the SUV had a driver's license that identified him as Jeffrey Tyson who is Lantana's police chief.
According to a police report, when the Boca Raton officer asked the chief about the crash his response was, "I tapped him in the ass... no big deal."
Tyson said he was on Federal Highway and on the way home from his doctor.
When told he was not on Federal Highway, Tyson said he was on Congress Avenue.
The officer said the crash actually happened on Military Trail.
Police then arrested Tyson for leaving the scene of a crash and DUI.
According to the police report the chief was tested on an Intoxilyzer breath testing device and provided samples of .229 and .234.
He was then transported to the Palm Beach County Jail.
Boca Raton police say they found a metal coffee cup inside the chief's SUV that was red in color and smelled like alcohol.
After spending much of the afternoon at the Palm Beach County Jail, Tyson was released around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on his own recognizance.
