LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- - A Lake Worth teen is facing deportation after he ran onto the field at Sunlife Stadium to meet on the the biggest athletes in the world, Real Madrid soccer star Christiano Ronaldo.
But the very person Ronald Gjoka hugged is coming to his defense.
Gjoka said he will never forget that moment on August 7th. Not because the fatherless 19-year-old finally met his role model, Christiano Ronaldo, but because it could change his life forever.
"Somebody's safety could have been in danger and I acknowledge that mistake and believe me, I will not do it again. I was just kind of in the heat of the moment," said Gjoka.
The soccer fan made a split second decision to jump the wall at Sunlife stadium and embrace Ronaldo, arguably the biggest name in soccer.
That choice could cost the Canadian citizen everything.
The Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office is pressing trespassing and disorderly conduct charges.
"If they don't drop the charges, I could face deportation and everything will all be for nothing, all over a hug," said Gjoka.
Now, the teens hero is coming to his rescue.
Ronaldo penned a letter he sent from his home in Portugal to South Florida where he pleads with the state attorney's office to throw out the case.
"He (Gjoka) has bright future and I don't want that future detrimentally affected," wrote Ronaldo.
The soccer star also noted Gjoka was never violent and that the two spoke for awhile.
"I mean I think it's compelling. I mean I think it certainly comes from the heart. It's genuine, it's as real as it gets," said Richard Hujber, an attorney helping Gjoka on the case.
Hujber said his client has not prior issues with the law.
Gjoka said he is even more in awe now that his hero is trying to help him.
"I hope so. I really hope so. I know America being the country it is has to enforce law and be strict, but I really hope and pray to god that in my case I get a pardon," said Gjoka.
When reached for comment on Friday, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office did not return calls or emails.
The next planned court date in October 7th.
