LAKE WORTH, Fla. - 17-year-old Rachelle Battle could not hold back her tears. Miami Dolphins player Brandon Fields, cheerleaders and Sun Life Financial surprised her with a five thousand dollar college scholarship Thursday.
One of the scholarship judges said, "Urban Youth Impact nominated her for her commitment to her education as well to the selfless support she provides to her community."
Rachelle spent part of her life in an uphill battle. She didn't have a place to call home. Instead, Rachel said she lived with different relatives. "My mother's mother and my dad's mother. So I've been pretty much there and in shelters."
But now she has something to smile about.
Dolphins punter Brandon Fields said, "All of the tough times that she went through she toughed it out and did what she needed to do and did what she was supposed to do. She did the right thing and it's paying off for her."
When she goes off to college next year, Rachel says she plans to major in biology. "Well I am thinking about going to FSU or possibly FIU. I'm not sure yet, but I am working on my college entry essays."
