SUBURBAN LAKE WORTH, Fla. - Adam Brown is behind bars charged with aggravated assault after police say he shot his wife in Lake Worth with an AK 47.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office responded to the couple's home late Saturday night.
According to a probable cause statement, the victim was shot in the legs. Investigators say Brown has PTSD and served in Iraq up until late 2009.
"Ever since he came back he hasn't been following through with what he needed to. He is on a lot of medication. He is hard to live with," Jillian Angelone, a friend of the victim, said.
Angelone says the victim told her in the past that her husband was "going crazy."
"He snapped I guess," Angelone said.
According to the probable cause, the couple was arguing over money when Brown said he, "flipped out."
Documents show he later told investigators he remembers holding the gun, but doesn't remember shooting his wife.
"One of the symptoms of PTSD can be agitation as well as episodes of violence" Dr. Michael Busse with the VA hospital in West Palm Beach said.
Busse is not working on this particular case, but says blackouts can happen with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
"Flashbacks are going back to another place and not really recognizing where you are. There is a potential for people to not be aware of their current situation," Dr. Busse said.
According to the U.S. Army, Brown was in the Army for nearly four years and served one tour in Iraq. He received a good conduct medal.
He remains behind bars at the Palm Beach County Jail. Neighbors say his wife has been in and out of surgery in the hospital while doctors try to save her legs.
