LAKE WORTH — Authorities have identified a Lake Worth man who was shot in the chest Tuesday night by a deputy after allegedly charging at the deputy's partner with a knife.
According to a statement released this afternoon, 23-year-old Jesus Barreto, 23, died after he was shot in the torso by a deputy around 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The deputy has not been named.
He was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead from gunshot wounds, said Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sherriff's Office.
Barbera said Tuesday that two deputies were dispatched to a disturbance, after neighbors called the sheriff's office. As deputies approached the home, Barreto walked out with a large knife and charged at the deputies.
Barreto was ordered to drop the knife, but refused to comply, Barbera said. One of the deputies deployed his Taser, which had no effect.
In fear of his life and the life of his partner, the second deputy shot the man in the torso, Barbera said.
