LAKE WORTH, Fla. - A child playing with a lighter Saturday morning started a fire that destroyed an apartment and left a family of five homeless, according to Capt. Albert Borroto, spokesman for Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
Fire crews responded around 11:30 a.m. to a two-story apartment fire at 1760 3rd Avenue N in Lake Worth. They found light smoke coming from a second-story apartment and, after locating the fire in a back bedroom, attacked it aggressively until the fire was extinguished, Borroto said. .
The family of five was outside the apartment when fire crews arrived, Borroto said.
Borroto said there were no reports of injuries and that the fire was contained to the apartment.
A Red Cross spokesman said the non-profit organization is providing the family with lodging, food, and recovery supplies.
