LAKE WORTH - Sixty-eight days after the spill in the Gulf of Mexico began, Palm Beach County residents are joining a global movement to draw a line in the sand.

"There are more than twenty beaches in Palm Beach County, 220 beaches in Florida and 800 beaches around the world...to hold hands and draw a line in the sand against the reckless development of the oil reserves around the world," said Tom Warnke, Surf Rider Foundation.

On one side, BP and any other energy company, willing to drill for oil offshore.

"There's some powerful, powerful money and lobbying efforts on the behalf of the energy companies," said Allan Hendricks, Equality Florida.

On the other side, 600 like minded individuals ready to sacrifice their time in a symbolic gesture of defiance to what they claim is an outdated, outmoded form of energy.

"We have to develop the alternative forms of energy much more quickly and try to protect the ocean," Warnke said.

On Lake Worth Beach, the line stretched for over a mile as protestors and state officials, gathered to share their views on the menace of offshore drilling

"We're going to clean up the mess that BP has made," said State Senate Candidate Kelly Skidmore.

"We shouldn't be doing any drilling at a time that we are not absolutely certain that it's safe," said Mary Brandenburg, Florida State Representative.

"The dollars might be easy to put into a revenue in a budget, but that's not the reason we should do it," said participant, Mark Pafford.

All the organizations involved say they're going to continue to hold events to raise awareness about the dangers of offshore oil drilling.
