LAKE WORTH, Fla. - A Lake Worth woman accused of hitting two people with her car and plowing through a bus stop appeared in court Wednesday afternoon for the first of two arraignments this month.
Laurie Dougherty, 38, is being formally charged for a separate incident on July 5, when she was cited for driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance. She’ll be back in court on September 6th to be arraigned for the July 22 crash that injured two people at the bus stop.
Surveillance video captured the incident. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies say Dougherty was speeding around 10:15 a.m. when she lost control of her car on Tenth Avenue, just east of Military Trail. Surveillance video shows the car running off the road and straight through a bus stop. The car hit two people before demolishing the bus stop.
Both victims were rushed to the hospital. One of them, a woman, is still at Delray Medical Center recovering from multiple injuries. She is expected to recover. The other victim, an elderly man, was treated at the hospital for his injuries and released.
Dougherty, who has a history of driver’s license suspensions, was arrested at the scene of the accident. However, she was taken to Wellington Regional Medical Center for treatment after complaining she was in pain.
She was asked Wednesday if she was sorry about what happened. "Of course I am," she replied.
