SUBURBAN LAKE WORTH, Fla. - Numerous white pickup trucks enter the Valencia Shores community daily, but recently someone drove a white truck posing as an animal care and control officer.
Now the 55 and over community is on edge.
"It's quite disturbing," community homeowner's association president, Abe Fenster said. "We try and make every effort to protect our residents and give them as much security as possible in a gated community."
Fenster said he saw the impersonator come into the community's office.
He said the man looked official.
"He had a badge, had an ID, gave us a business card and represented himself completely as being part of an independent company for animal care and control," Fenster said.
Investigators say the imposter came to cite a resident for neighborhood complaints about their dog.
He allegedly demanded $550 or else he'd take the elderly couple's dog.
The couple paid the imposter.
"If anybody comes to your house and says give me money I'm from the county. I'm going to take your dog. That's not us. That's not what we do," Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Operations manager, Capt. David Walesky said.
Capt. Walesky says they want to stop this person before they scam someone else.
"We already have enough challenges trying to work with people trying to resolve some of these problems out there so we want people to be able to work with us and trust us," Capt. Walesky said.
The community office has cameras inside as well as video surveillance which they hope help sheriff's detectives.
"We have his license and the name. Now if that's real we don't know," Fenster said.
Soon they hope to find out, hopefully in the form of an arrest.
