SUBURBAN LAKE WORTH, Fla. - A suburban Lake Worth man, who is an Iraq war veteran, is accused of shooting his wife in the legs.
Investigators with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office say Adam Brown suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and that he claims not to remember pulling the trigger.
The case highlights struggles of others in the community who also deal with the symptoms of PTSD every day.
In the same boots he wore while on his two separate tours of duty in Iraq, Army Sgt. James Roberts of Lake Worth discusses the battle that he and so many others who saw combat still fight today.
"I have been living with this every day since 2006," said Roberts, who says his PTSD was caused, in part, when his patrol team was targeted by a roadside bomb. It changed his life, he says.
"It makes my whole body feel like there's electricity running through it," said Roberts.
Roberts says that any number of things, including a door slamming or a crack of thunder, can incapacitate him and bring him right back to battle.
Meanwhile, doctors continued to work to save the legs of a Samantha Brown.
Investigators say her husband, an Iraq war veteran suffering from PTSD, shot her multiple times during an argument at their suburban Lake Worth home early Sunday.
Authorities say that Adam Brown told a 911 dispatcher that he 'flipped out', only remembering hearing gunshots and holding a gun - not actually pulling the trigger.
Neighbors of the victim say she has been undergoing multiple surgeries. Her husband is charged with Aggravated Assault.
News of the shooting took a toll on Roberts, even though he does not know the suspect or the victim.
"This person did something that he normally would not have done to somebody he deeply, deeply cares about," said Roberts. "It puts my already heightened senses on a higher drive," he said of his PTSD. "It's something I can't turn off."
