A Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office K-9 deputy, shot in the line of duty, has been recognized with a pair of special awards.
K-9 Kenzo received the Medal of Honor and Combat Star, which is the law enforcement equivalent to the US Armed Forces Purple Heart.
In June, Kenzo was shot twice while protecting his handler's life and the lieutenant with him during a shootout with a suspect at a Greenacres mobile home park.
"Kenzo is a deputy and he put his life literally on the line for the deputies that were out there. He took two bullets and kept on going," Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.
One bullet in Kenzo was removed. The other went through Kenzo's body.
The 9-year-old German Shepherd was back on the job two months after the shooting.
