WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Health experts said the spread of the flu in Palm Beach County was labeled mild several weeks ago. But new numbers from the county's health department show more cases are being reported, prompting officials to label the spread of the flu to moderate.

The flu is spreading quickest in southern and central Palm Beach County.

There has been an increase in the number of absences from school and more flu-related visits to the ER. According to the health department, two local nursing homes have reported outbreaks.

According to the CDC's weekly flu review, Florida had 41 counties with mild cases and 24 counties with moderate cases in week two.

The CDC said the flu peaked several weeks earlier compared to last year. Experts said to expect to see an increase in flu activity into March.

This seasons flu vaccine is said to be 62 percent affect against the flu strain. County officials are urging people to get the flu shot.

The Palm Beach County Health Department is offering free flu shots at the South Florida Fair on Jan. 29 and Feb. 1, from noon to 4 p.m.
