Eric Pfahler, Kelly Tyko, Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, contributed to this report.
Thousands of elementary, middle and combination schools across the state will receive their grades today from the Florida Department of Education.
The grades are based primarily on how well students performed on the FCAT.
In 2012, 40% to 60% of those schools dropped from an A grade.
Fifteen middle schools were given F grades, an increase of 3% compared to 2011.
Educators fear the number of F grades could be higher this year even with the temporary safety net put in place by the board because of changes to the grading formula and higher testing standards.
The safety net is designed to prevent a school from dropping more than one letter grade.
Early simulated data shows that more than 100 schools could receive an F grade according to the Orlando Sentinel.
High school grades are expected to be released later this year or early next year.
