LAKE WORTH, Fla. - Beer.
It's not just a drink to some. It's also a hobby.
Corey Wilson at the Bx Beer Depot in Lake Worth says, "A lot of people think home brewing is a daunting and difficult task. It really isn't. It's a simple process. Really you're looking at a two hour process and possibly a week to ferment."
Basically you use hops and different grains, add yeast, boil and wait for the sugar to ferment into alcohol.
And after making your own beer, naturally, you might want to make some money off it.
These rare and quality brews are called 'craft' beers.
Sally Parsons who owns the Bx Beer Depot says, "The pace is trying to keep up with the appetite for good craft beer. It's seen amazing growth across this country"
For the past few years, sales from the big beer companies has gone down, but the little craft companies have really gone way up.
Kenny St. Cyr is a delivery driver for Fresh Beer Distribution. He says "If you're on Facebook and you're friends with these guys they'll tell you the day they're going to bottle it and the country gets excited."
Beer enthusiasts are coming together at places like BX Beer Depot in Lake Worth to socialize and try each others best brews.
James Yorke tried his hand at home brewing and is hooked. "It's not a frat party. We're not brewing our own beer to get drunk per se; it's a great side effect. But it’s got so much more to do with the social aspect, the community aspect, and you know..sharing."
For those who need help getting started, Bx also has classes for the beginner, so you can get your beer just right.
Yorke states, "When you make your own beer, you control the ingredients. They're fresh. You smell the hops, you touch the malt, you taste the ingredients before you make it so the freshness is all really key in how you’re making you home brew."
And the best part about it is, you won't have to take that aspirin in the morning.
Yorke says, "You're not feeling the after effects of a long night drinking, you're enjoying a nice home brew, you don't get those after effects."
Some of those Craft beers you might want to friend on Facebook are:
-Cigar City Brewing
-Dogfish Head Brewing
