PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - Jeff Kappenman sat down to eat a bag a chips only to lose his appetite when he saw the expiration date. He said the soy crisps he was about to eat were dated to expire May 8.
"It's just not right," he said. "I thought I got a bargain because it's 80 percent off or 60 percent or whatever...where's the bargain when it's out of date and it should be going in the garbage to begin with?"
Kappenman says he returned the items to the Winn Dixie store on Hypoluxo Road and got his money back but says even the manager agreed the items belong in the trash.
And what did the manager tell you? He was asked. "He says, 'well this needs to go in the garbage.' "
The manager on duty says he had no knowledge of the expired items. "I'm not supposed to talk about anything with the news sorry," he said.
He said to contact Winn Dixie's media personnel.
A review of store shelves revealed several expired items including popular cereal brands like Kellogg’s Special K. They had expirations of January 2010 and March of 2010. Chips had expiration dates of February 10, 2010.
Kappenman says the longer than expected shelf life for some of the items is an indication to him of why Winn Dixie is saying goodbye.
"It's no question in my mind why a company like Winn Dixie's going out of business... there's no surprise to me why places like this go out of business."
A call to Winn Dixie was not returned.
A sign inside the store said all sales are final.
This Winn Dixie will close September, 22.
