PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - The National Weather Service in Miami released an update on how the rainy season is coming along . While the east coast has had a plethora of rain, the west coast has gotten much less.
This is due primarily to the persistent southwest winds in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, pushing afternoon thunderstorms eastward toward the coast.
West Palm Beach recorded its 12th wettest May-July, with +8.40 inches above average. Juno Beach also recorded more than 8 inches above average for the three months.
Miami was the winner coming in 5th wettest with a whopping +14.64 inches above average.
To contrast that, Canal Point had its 7th driest with (-5.59) inches below average and Naples had its 5th driest with nearly 8 inches below average.
Due to the rain, temperatures have been a little below average for the time period. The West Palm Beach average temperature was 80.7 which is 0.1 degrees below average. Ft. Lauderdale had the biggest drop at 1.0 degree below average.
The forecast calls for above normal temperatures for the second half of the rainy season, and equal chances of above, below, or near average rainfall.
August-October is usually the busiest part of hurricane season. The National Weather Service in Miami says "South Florida has been directly hit by a total of 11 hurricanes in August going back to the late 1800s. Only October and September have had more hurricane strikes." so they suggest "now is the time to make sure personal and business hurricane plans are in place and that you and your families are ready this hurricane season."
