ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker said Tuesday she plans to issue a press release and answer questions about the county's ever-changing elections results.
Protestors planned to return to the street outside her office at 10 a.m. Tuesday to demand accurate results, they said Monday night.
Walker said she would explain in the release why Sunday's recount of early votes cast Nov. 1-3 resulted in more votes in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie races and fewer votes in countywide races, among other things.
Walker recounted only the last three days of early voting, despite calls from U.S. Rep. Allen West 's campaign and others in the community to recount all early votes, just to be sure. Walker has said the Nov. 1-3 votes were affected by the changing of a tallying-machine card so the previous card would not be overloaded in the heavy turnout.
Walker's office is preparing for a state-mandated recount of the Fort Pierce mayoral race between Vince Gaskin and Linda Hudson Wednesday. The difference between votes falls within the half-percent requirement for a machine recount of regular ballots and "under and over" votes — where voters marked no choice or two choices.
Results had Gaskin ahead by five votes after Election Day and then ahead by 21 votes after provisional ballots were counted Thursday and Friday. Hudson then took the lead by 61 votes after early votes from Nov. 1-3 were recounted Sunday.
