WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich., (WXYZ) - A police officer in West Bloomfield, a suburb in the northwest area of Detroit, has been shot and killed.
Officers responded to shots fired at a home on Forest Edge Lane Sunday afternoon in the area of Pontiac Trail and Halsted. When they arrived at the scene they were met with gunfire.
One officer was struck, he was taken to McLaren Hospital in Pontiac where he later died. He was a 12-year veteran of the force.
Officers retreated from the home. Only the gunman remains inside.
Some residents of Forest Edge Lane have been evacuated to the Township Hall.
The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, SWAT and the Oakland County Sheriff's Department are on the scene.
Authorities say residents living in the area will be able to leave but will not be able to return until the situation is cleared.
