The St. Lucie County Fire District, along with the 211 call center, just launched a program to install
more than 3,200 smoke detectors in homes throughout the county. This comes in the wake of several recent fires in which there were no working smoke detectors.
Thanks to a federal grant, residents can call 211 to arrange for a firefighter to come and install a smoke detector in their homes.
There are also 200 special devices available for the hearing impaired.
