Robert Gladden: Perry Hall High School shooting suspect used shotgun, drank vodka, police say

A Maryland teen is accused of taking a shotgun to Perry Hall High School and shooting a classmate.
 
Robert Gladden, Jr. is charged with attempted first degree murder and first degree assault. Gladden is 15-years-old but he is being charged as an adult.
 
Police say Gladden opened fire inside the cafeteria at Perry Hall High School Monday morning.

The student who was shot is in critical condition at Shock Trauma Tuesday morning. The victim's name has not been released.

Police say Gladden brought a broken down shotgun in pieces that could be reassembled. He also brought 21 rounds of 16-guage seven-point-five shot, and a bottle of vodka to school with him.

"We know at this time, he was able to consume several sips of alcohol. We do not believe he was impaired or intoxicated," said Chief Jim Johnson with the Baltimore Police Department. He says the shotgun was more than 40 years old.

Johnson says he's aware of reports that Gladden had been bullied, but he says Gladden has not indicated to detectives that bullying was a motive.

Monday was the first day of the school year for students at one of Baltimore County's largest public high schools.

Several students who witnessed the shooting say a guidance counselor tackled Gladden after the first shot was fired. Witnesses say a second shot was fired into the ceiling during the struggle.
