Nicholas Ivie: Border Patrol agent shot, killed in Naco, Arizona identified as 30-year-old man

NACO, AZ - Authorities have identified a U.S. Border Patrol agent who died after a shooting near Naco, Arizona Tuesday morning.

Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Ivie, 30, was killed after he and two other agents responded to a sensor hit near mile-maker 352 on Highway 80, according to U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Rob Daniels.

During a 2 p.m. press conference, an FBI spokesman said they have pledged all of their resources from across the country to assist and support the investigation.

He would not give answers regarding any findings so far from evidence, information about suspects, or possible connections to the failed Fast and Furious operation.

President Barack Obama called Ivie's family Tuesday to offer condolences and to express his gratitude for Ivie's "selfless service to his nation," a White House statement said.

Obama made it clear that the administration "was doing everything it could to locate those responsible."

Spokesman Brent M. Cagen with the Tucson Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol said the agents involved in the shooting are assigned to the Brian Terry Station.

Three agents total were involved: 1 was killed, 1 received non-life threatening injuries, and another was unharmed, said Cochise County Sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas.

The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. after an alarm was triggered on one of the many sensors along the border, Capas said. The agents were walking up a hill when shots were fired.

It happened seven miles east of Bisbee and five miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Authorities have not identified any suspects, Capas said. And it's not known whether the agents returned fire.

The injured agent was airlifted to a hospital and is expected to be OK, Capas said.

That agent was shot in the buttocks and ankle, according to The Associated Press.

Names of the other two involved have not been released.

The FBI and Cochise County Sheriff’s Office are leading the investigation.

Ivie was a native of Provo, Utah and joined the U.S. Border Patrol in January 2008. An FBI spokesman said Ivie leaves behind a wife and two children.

Authorities are urging the public to report any activity they may have seen and be on the lookout for anything suspicious by calling 1-877-872-7435.

Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed in December 2010 during a firefight with armed bandits.

The shooting was later linked to the Fast and Furious gun smuggling operation.

The station in Naco involved in Tuesday's shooting was recently named after Terry.
