Mad cow disease reported in California

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --A senior manager with a Central California company says a cow at its Hanford, Calif., transfer station tested positive for mad cow disease.

   Dennis Luckey, executive vice president of Baker Commodities in Hanford, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the disease was discovered when the company selected the cow for random sampling.

   The Agriculture Department confirmed on Tuesday that the cow is the fourth discovered in the United States to test positive for the disease, but stressed that consumers were not at risk because the animal was not bound for the food supply.
