It's day three in the murder trial of Jodi Arias.

The Arizona woman is charged with stabbing her ex-boyfriend more than two dozen times, shooting him in the head, and slitting his throat after an afternoon of sex.

Arias first denied the killing, but now she says she did it in self-defense.

Prosecutors are asking for the death penalty.

Arias previously sat quietly in the courtroom Thursday as prosecutors presented new evidence in her high-profile murder trial.

Jurors listened to a phone recording Arias had with Mesa Police Det. Estaban Flores, shortly after her former boyfriend, Travis Alexander, was found murdered to death in his Mesa home in 2008.

Alexander had been stabbed 27 times and shot in the head.

Here is an excerpt of the phone conversation:

Arias: "I just wanted to offer any assistance I might have ... I was a really good friend of Travis' and I just ... don't know a lot of anything."

Flores: "What have you heard so far?"

Arias: "I heard that he was ... he passed away ... I don't know. I heard all kinds of rumors that there was a lot of blood. I heard that his roommate found him ... people were ... I'm sorry ... I'm upset. I heard nobody has been able to get a hold of him for about a week."

Arias, 32, was later asked why the victim's friends we're immediately suspicious that Arias had something to do with Alexander's death.

"I needed to talk to you to find out why they would be say something like that," Flores said. "Why would they start pointing fingers in your direction?"

Arias replied, "I don't know. Maybe because I'm an ex-girlfriend. We had a lot of fights."

Defense attorneys spent the afternoon trying to depict the victim as a sexual deviant, alleging that Alexander abused Arias, often calling her a slut and other sexually offensive names.

Defense attorneys told jurors that Alexander was abusive and that Arias acted in self-defense when she killed him.
