MESA, AZ -- A woman faked having breast cancer so she could have her breasts augmented, according to Mesa, Arizona police.
Last August, Jami Toler, 27, of Phoenix told her co-workers at Hallmark Hospice that she had been diagnosed with the disease.
She claimed she was going to need a double mastectomy and then have her breasts reconstructed, court records state.
Toler said the surgeries were going to cost around $8,000 and asked her friends and family to help raise the funds.
Investigators say her loved-ones held fundraisers and raised the money, which was then deposited into a bank account.
It was only when Toler returned to work and couldn’t provide a doctor’s note for her medical leave that the staff became suspicious, said Carmen Klemis, the executive director of Hallmark Hospice.
“It’s a form of betrayal,” Klemis said.
Investigators examined her medical records which that did not indicate any form of cancer, but confirmed her breast augmentation.
On Wednesday, police arrested Toler at her new job at a car dealership near 12th Street and Camelback Road.
Klemis said she does not regret donating time and money to help Toler, stating that her passion is helping those who are sick, and at the time, they thought Toler was.
