SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Violent storms ripped through southern Missouri Tuesday night, killing at least one person and injuring many others.
Lamont Swanson, coroner of Dallas County, Missouri, said a woman died after storms passed through the county, but did not offer additional details.
Lt. Dana Eagan of the Dallas County Sheriff's Office says 13 others were injured when a possible tornado hit a mobile home park south of Buffalo. She did not have any details on the person who died either.
In a live interview on 41 Action News Today, Eagan said a business and the trailer park behind it sustained severe damage.
"The good thing is everybody has access to a weather radio," Eagan said, adding tornado sirens went off and could be heard for miles.
Emergency crews are going door-to-door in areas near where the damage was centered, she said.
About 70 miles south of Buffalo, significant damage was reported in Branson after an apparent tornado touched down, ripping roofs and siding off buildings and theaters in the town's famous entertainment district, Mayor Raeanne Presley said.
Speaking with 41 Action News anchors Curtis Jay and JiaoJiao Shen Wednesday morning, Presley said at least 20 injuries were reported, ranging from minor to moderate. She hadd heard of no fatalities.
National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Griffin said some people in Branson were trapped in their homes.
Taney County Sheriff Jimmie Russell said searchers were going house to house .
