Aurora, Colorado, Century Movie Theater 'Dark Knight Rises' shooting victims as young as 3 months

AURORA, Colo. -- Hospitals across the metro area are treating the patients from the deadly shooting at a movie theater near the Aurora Mall. Witnesses said a gunman opened fire, during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."

Police said 10 people died in the theater, two died at nearby hospitals. The Police Department previously released a preliminary number of 14 dead, but only 12 can be confirmed at this time. Approximately 50 total persons were shot, including the deceased.

The injured range in age from 3 months old to adults.

University Hospital

University Hospital said it activated its disaster plan at 1 a.m. "The entire emergency department staff was called in," said Dr. Comilla Sasson with University Hospital. University Hospital said while its emergency room was full before the shooting happened, it still took 20 victims. They ranged in age from 3 months old to 45 years old. The victim's injuries include gunshot wounds and shrapnel injuries, Sasson said. She said nine people are in critical condition.

Swedish Hospital

A spokeswoman for Swedish Hospital said the hospital went on alert at 1:15 a.m. and began calling in extra staff. Swedish Hospital received three patients, all of them with gunshot wounds. Two patients were in surgery as of 4 a.m. Those victims were a 20-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man. Both were in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. The third victim was treated and released.

Other Hospitals

Children's Hospital told 7NEWS is treating six victims from the theaters. They range in age from six to 31.Denver Health Medical Center has six patients from the Aurora shooting. One is in critical condition and the other five are in fair condition.
