A mother and her two young daughters were rescued when their vehicle ended up dangling from a California freeway bridge after a big rig rear-ended their BMW.

The BMW struck the bridge railing and teetered over a 100-foot drop into the creek with Kelli Groves and two daughters, ages 10 and 10 months, trapped inside.

NBC reports Navy Seabees construction workers happened on the scene. NBC says they used their heavy duty forklift to secure the car which was teetering over the side of the bridge.

The man driving the big rig was killed when his vehicle crashed into the creek below and burst into flames.

The San Juan Capistrano family was pulled out of their demolished car an hour later. They were hospitalized.

The California Highway Patrol says the 10-week-old baby slept through the entire ordeal and credit her mother for saving her life. She had properly placed the baby in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat.

The Associated Press, NBC News and KSBY contributed to this report.
