SCOTTSDALE, AZ - A small child is in critical condition after his father left him in a vehicle for several hours on Saturday.
Scottsdale police Officer David Pubins said officers responded to the Scottsdale Quarter shopping area around 2 p.m. after a 28-year-old man flagged down security to get medical help for his 1-year-old son.
According to Pubins, the father got to work in the area of Scottsdale Road and Greenway-Hayden Loop around 9 a.m. with the child in his car seat, after being unable to find a sitter for the child today.
Pubins said the father intended to leave the boy in the car with the air conditioning and vehicle running while he went to work.
Between 11 and 11:30 a.m. the father went to a nearby fast food restaurant with the child still in the vehicle.
He reportedly told investigators the child seemed fine at that point.
The father returned to work and felt the car was cool enough so turned it off, Pubins said.
The suspect came out at 2 p.m. to check once more on the child and found the boy in a lethargic state.
Pubins said the father began to drive around and look for a hospital when he pulled into the mall and flagged down security for help.
The child was taken to a Scottsdale hospital in critical condition, Pubins said.
Pubins said the father faces charges of child abuse, child neglect and endangerment.
