HOBE SOUND, Fla.-- A Treasure Coast mother is preparing to bury her fallen soldier son.
U.S Army Sgt. Justin Johnson's remains will arrive in Stuart Wednesday morning. He was killed in Afghanistan on his third tour of duty. He grew up in Martin County.
"My heart was kind of heavy today because I know he will be coming home tomorrow," said Johnson's mother Sonia Randolph.
She sums up the day in one word: difficult. "Flood of emotions that I'm kind of working through and filtering through," Randolph explained.
On Wednesday, she will welcome her son home one last time. "It's where he was born and raised and where all of his family is, so we're going to welcome him home."
She says this homecoming is what she feared most the last time he was sent to serve overseas. He was engaged to be married, and the father of a 4-year-old son.
"I never thought that I would be burying him. I always thought he would be burying me, " said Randolph..
Randolph says she finds comfort knowing he didn't die alone, and that he died doing what he loved.
" I know that my loss is heaven's gain, " she said.
Randolph spent some of the day reminiscing with family through pictures. "My favorite memory was watching him graduate from bootcamp. He had a smile that would bright up any room he walked in."
Randolph says she wishes no family would have to experience what she will on Wednesday, wishing for an end to the war.
"My hope is that so many young people will not continue to lose their lives, because they have so much to live for," Randolph said.
Tomorrow is another day to remember what Johnson lived for. "I probably won't sleep a wink tonight but I am comforted in knowing he's going to be home, " she said.
Johnson's arrival is expected just after 10:30 Wednesday morning at Witham Field in Stuart near the Jet Center.
The public is welcome to line Aviation Way with signs of support for the family.
