Water main break closes part of Toney Penna Drive in Jupiter

JUPITER — Traffic on a 300-foot stretch of Toney Penna Drive east of Maplewood Drive is expected to be closed up to five days following a water pipe break today that sent about 400,000 gallons to the surface.

"It was a lot of water of real fast," said David Brown, the town's utilities director.

The intersection of Toney Penna and Maplewood is closed and is not expected to reopen until Thursday morning, Jupiter Police Chief Frank Kitzerow said.

A stretch of Toney Penna from Maplewood east to Mohican Boulevard will be closed into the weekend while repairs are made to the pipe and the pavement, Kitzerow said.

Boil water orders are in effect for Jerry Thomas Elementary School, which is at the intersection of Toney Penna and Maplewood, and the maintenance building in the Loxahatchee Club golf course on Maplewood.

No residential neighborhoods in the area have boil water orders, Brown said.

The 12-inch-wide pipe burst around 12:30 p.m., flooding streets and medians enough to close traffic around the intersection. The pipe, which was in use for 35 years, burst when a cap blew off, Brown said.
