SUBURBAN WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Two people are recovering at area hospitals after being shot during an altercation at the South Florida Fair between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Saturday.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a fight broke out and gunshots were fired near Gate 2 on the north side of the fair's property.

Workers say families were hiding under counters and parents were holding on to their children.

Two people were injured; one was airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center and the other victim was transported to Wellington Regional Medical Center. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Most visitors were not allowed to exit the fair as deputies conducted a search and placed it on lockdown.

"I didn't believe it at first, then they brought out the police line and the helicopters and I'm like 'wow people got shot' and I guess in retrospect it was little bit scary because it was really, really close," said one fair worker.

YouReporter Jerry, who sent in a photograph after the shooting, said, "Sounded like 8-9 shots fired."

He said he and his girlfriend hid behind a food truck when the shots rang out.

Just before 1 a.m., deputies reopened the exits for visitors to leave.

Deputies questioned several witnesses, but as of Sunday morning the gunman remained at large.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to call Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.
